4th annual Porchetta Tour in Umbria


Our program will consist of a variety of educational wine tastings and meals with Barbara, our tour leader and passionate champion of all things Umbrian.  We will have a pork centric hands on cooking class with Letizia Mattiaci our host at Madonna del Piatto agriturismo.  We will tour Foligno, Perugia, Monteflaco and the tiny borgo of San Terenziano where the Porchettiamo festival is held.  We will visit obscure wineries and wine bars and authentic trattorias.  We will sample porchetta and porchetta varaitions from the best makers all over Italy at the fair as well as experience a typical Italian street fair and all the kitchy extravagance that comes along with it (accordion music and dancing girls).  We will have a porchetta making demo with one of the best porchetta makers in the area.  And best of all we will have lunch at what I consider the most exclusive table in Italy, the table in my chef friend Salvatore Denaro's garden (weather permitting of course!) where we will eat just picked garden vegetables and something meaty he dreams up for us (I'm always hoping for his grilled lamb chops but you never know) last year we battled his chickens for the bread on the table and ended the meal with rose petal gelato made from his beautiful organic roses which perfumed the air and garnished the table as we dined.

Day 1

Thur. May 18, 2017

   •       afternoon: Group pick up available from local Train Station

   •       Arrival at Agriturismo Alla Madonna del Piatto and welcome drink.

   •       Visit and workshop at award winning free-range pig farm. Guests will discover the family’s traditional meat butchering and curing methods.

   •       Delicious Umbrian BBQ dinner at the breeder’s farmhouse

 

 

Day 2

Fri. May 19, 2017

   •       Morning: breakfast 

   •       Free time- take a hike through the olive groves or simply relax in the garden and take in the views of the beautiful Umbrian countryside.

   •       Hands on cooking class at alla Madonna del Piatto with Letizia followed by a lunch with wine on the terrace

   •       Afternoon: guided visit to Assisi, Unesco world heritage town and site of the basilica di San Francesco, free time and dinner in selected restaurant

 

Day 3

Sat. May 20, 2017

   •       Morning: breakfast

   •       Day Trip to the Porchettiamo Festival in mediaeval town of San Terenziano with a tasting of various types of porchetta.

   •       Afternoon:

   •       guided tour of an Artisan workshop in Bevagna or Perugia

   •       Dinner at local trattoria

 

Day 4

Sun. May 21, 2017

   •       Morning: breakfast

   •       Porchetta making demo - we will have a demo of butchering a whole pig, how its seasoned, tied and cooked at a local porchetta maker.

   •       Lunch at a private local home or garden

   •       Afternoon: winery tour to taste the local fabulous wines: grechetto, montefalco rosso and sagrantino

   •       Passeggiata (evening constitutional) in Montefalco, the gorgeous hill top town at the center of the Sagrantino wine region and dinner at local restaurant in the area.

 

Day 5

Mon. May 22, 2017

   •       Breakfast

Departure from AMDP, transfer to Assisi, Foligno or Perugia’s train station.

 

If you want to get to know the real Italy a little bit and you are interested in exploring the lesser known countryside in a low key fashion this is the trip to you.  The price per person is 1450 euros which includes local transportation, all meals and lodging.  the price does not include the cost of getting yourself to Umbria!  The last two years have been amazing  and I anticipate it being just that much better this year!  Please email us info@porsena.com for all the details on how to sign up
